Overview

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s Richmond District, CQ Noodles offers an inviting slice of authentic Chinese cuisine that feels like a homecoming for lovers of bold, traditional flavors. This unassuming restaurant specializes in Chinese dishes, with an emphasis on Sichuan and Shanghai styles, all crafted to highlight the freshest ingredients and handmade noodles.

The star attraction at CQ Noodles is undoubtedly their Dan Dan Noodles. Served with either fresh hand-cut or classic versions, the noodles come drenched in a rich, spicy sauce that balances heat with deep umami and savory notes. The texture of the noodles—springy and chewy—perfectly complements the bold Sichuan seasoning, making each bite memorable. Alongside these, dishes like the Shanghai Pan Fried Dumplings offer a satisfying crispness and flavor that feels both traditional and comforting, while the Clay Pot Rice Noodle soups, whether braised beef, chicken, or duck, reveal a deft attention to stock preparation and ingredient harmony, elevating this humble noodle soup to a soulful experience.

Another crowd favorite is the cucumber salad, a refreshing contrast to the strong, spicy flavors that defines many of their mains. It serves as a palate cleanser with its crisp cucumbers and gently spicy, tangy dressing. Complementing the meal is the sour plum drink (suan mei tang), a traditional beverage once a staple here and sorely missed by some regulars, but the overall experience remains vibrant.

The atmosphere at CQ Noodles is laid-back and welcoming, a perfect backdrop for both casual dinners and gatherings of food enthusiasts. The restaurant is modest yet clean, with attentive service that feels personal rather than intrusive. It’s the kind of place that attracts locals seeking authentic Chinese comfort food without any pretense—people who care most about honest cooking and layered flavors.

Targeting those who appreciate authentic, unflashy dining centered on Sichuan and Shanghai specialties, CQ Noodles excels at delivering consistent quality and boldness. Whether you’re a devotee of hand-pulled noodles or someone intrigued by lesser-known clay pot rice noodle soups, this spot provides a hearty, flavorful journey into regional Chinese cuisine. Its reputation as a cherished "hole in the wall" comes from its ability to satisfy discerning palates with well-executed recipes and a genuine sense of culinary love.

CQ Noodles is the kind of quaint neighborhood restaurant that quietly delivers some of the most unforgettable Sichuan flavors around. I’ve been twice now, and both visits were exceptional. The first time, I ordered an appetizer and the Dan Dan noodles, which came with fresh hand-cut noodles—possibly by request, or maybe that was the standard at the time. Either way, they were phenomenal: chewy, springy, and drenched in a sauce that was savory, spicy, and deeply satisfying. Yesterday, I returned with my son, who’s a discerning foodie with a palate that doesn’t tolerate mediocrity. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles again—this time with regular noodles—and they were still absolutely delicious. The flavors were so bold and layered, it didn’t matter what noodle type showed up. We also tried the cucumber salad, and it was a standout: crisp, high-quality cucumbers dressed in a light, tangy, slightly spicy marinade that felt like both a palate cleanser and a flavor bomb. One of our favorite parts? The homemade chili sauces left at every table. They’re not just condiments—they’re ceremonial. Smoky, spicy, and complex, they elevate every dish and feel like a love letter to Sichuan heat. The service is consistently warm and attentive, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. CQ Noodles feels like a local secret—unpretentious, authentic, and full of heart. If you’re looking for a place that honors flavor over flash and delivers Sichuan comfort with every bite, CQ Noodles is it. I can’t recommend it enough.

One of those hole in the wall places that San Franciscans love. Excellent Shanghai food. I had the Shanghai wonton / dumplings. Delicious broth, huge bowl, very very tasty Price was good $13 and service attentive and pleasant. Clean bathroom. I will definitely be coming back for more of the delicious hand pulled noodles when I have a group

Got the beef rib noodle house special Flavor changed under new management More bland than I remember I got medium spicy and there was a lot of red oil, but it wasn’t spicy in a fragrant way They also used to serve suan mei tang by default but that’s gone now Cucumber salad was good

So good! I loved this spot—the staff are super lovely, the restaurant is super clean, and the beef is super tender! Additionally, we got a pitcher of warm tea for free, which is nice as some places charge extra for tea instead of water. I would definitely come back.
